Iringa Urban Water Supply Phase II

Project Activities

The capital works comprised:

• A new raw water intake
• The extension and upgrading of the water treatment plant at Ndiuka (sand trap, dosing station, flocculators, dosing station, sludge drying beds, rapid sand filters, ancillary works, attendance quarters)
• The upgrading of the existing spring at Kitwiru
• A new pumping station incl. 2500 m³ water balance tank
• Booster pump station incl. 2900 m³ clear water balance tank
• The extension of the supply network by 184 km of distribution lines, 5 water kiosks, network zoning
• The extension of the sewerage system by 4 km of lateral sewers
• The construction of 310 sewerage house connections
• The refurbishment of the wastewater treatment plant
• The construction of a new office building
• The supply of equipment (5000 water meters, 30 bulk water meters, vehicles, leak detection and laboratory equipment, billing and accounting equipment, computers, software, etc.)
• Capacity building (technical and commercial operations to increase efficiency and revenues).

The existing Iringa WWTP was  extended from 17,000 to 60,000 PE and the wet weather flow increased from 1,772 to 6,255 m3/d.
The following structures were entirely newly designed and constructed:

• New screens and Parshall flume
• 4 new wetlands with a total surface of 4,000 m2.
• The following extension measures were conducted:
• Increasing the volume of the anaerobic ponds by increasing the depth of the ponds from 2.5 to 4.5 meters
• Increasing the number of the maturation ponds from 1 to 3 ponds
